Design a 3D Software Box

BoxShot
After much time and effort searching for an easy way to design a 3D software box , I arrived at what I think is an easy and quick solution to this problem. You will need “Inkscape” a scalable vector graphics application and “Gimp” an image processing application. Both are free to use open source applications and are under constant development.

The process is relatively straight forward, use Inkscape to design the front and side of the software box and Gimp to map the design onto the box itself. Using Gimp to apply the perspective (map to box) allows you to use bitmap images with your design, providing a wider scope for creativity.

Using pre-drawn clip art and photo's will speed up your design process no end and probably result in a more professional look. (depending on your artistic abilities)

Design the front and sides of the box – Start Inkscape.

Step 1
 Create a new drawing File > New > A4_Landscape.
Draw two boxes, one for the side 128 by 500 pixels and one for the front 400 by 500 pixels.
Step 2
Import any images or other artwork you would like to use, then use Inkscapes drawing tools to design the artwork for the side and front of the box.
Step 3
Use Inkscapes export bitmap function to save the front and side view of your design as png files.
